Safeguarding our Seeds

Legume preservation in practice

In this Global Bean Public Meeting, we explored legume preservation in practice, bringing together perspectives from scientific research and community-led initiatives to discuss how seed diversity can be safeguarded through collaboration, participation, and care.

The session focused on citizen science, seed saving, and local stewardship, highlighting how both institutional research and grassroots action play a key role in protecting legume biodiversity.

Featuring:

🌱 Dr. Kerstin Neumann – Plant biologist and group leader at IPK Gatersleben, and co-leader of the INCREASE Citizen Science Experiment, on how citizens across Europe contribute to conserving and characterising common bean genetic diversity.

🌾 Ana Ljubičić – Founder of Motika (Serbia), on building a community-based heirloom seed bank, sharing crops with local communities, and linking seed-saving practices to sustainability and global agricultural goals.
